The Cabine has approved a proposal to sign an updated bilateral agreement on the mutual recognition of driving licenses between the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka and the Italian People’s Government.
The original agreement, signed in 2011, expired in 2021. The updated agreement includes technological amendments and enhanced enforcement measures to streamline the process for license recognition between the two countries.
Under the new provisions, Sri Lankans who have lived in Italy for less than six years and held a valid Sri Lankan driving license prior to obtaining Italian citizenship will be able to convert their licenses into Italian driving licenses. Similarly, Italian nationals residing in Sri Lanka will be able to enforce their Italian driving licenses as valid Sri Lankan licenses.
The agreement aims to strengthen cooperation between the two nations while facilitating the mobility of citizens and ensuring compliance with modern technological and administrative standards.
