Special traffic plan in Colombo for Independence Day rehearsals

Colombo, Jan 27 (Daily Mirror) - The Colombo Traffic Division said today that a special traffic plan will be implemented in Colombo from January 29 to February 2, between 6:00 AM and 12:00 noon, in connection with rehearsals for the 77th National Independence Day celebrations.

Several roads in the area will be temporarily closed during the rehearsal period:

- Vidya Mawatha entrance from Wijerama Mawatha in Cinnamon Gardens.
- Bauddaloka Mawatha towards Maitland Place
- Bauddaloka Mawatha entrance towards Prema Keerthi De Alvis Mawatha
- Stanley Wijesundara Mawatha entrance towards Foundation Road
- Independence Roundabout entrance towards Independence Square
- Horton Place Maitland Crescent entrance towards Independence Roundabout
- RG Senanayake Mawatha along Maitland Crescent towards Independence Roundabout
- Maitland Crescent entrance from Independence Roundabout

Police said that while these roads will be closed during rehearsals, arrangements will be made to allow vehicles accessing government and private institutions in the area to pass without disrupting the rehearsals.

The best thing to do is nothing. I don't know what there is to celebrate. At the time of independence, Sri Lanka was the richest country in the British colonies with a huge gold reserve in the Bank of England and the prospect of becoming the leading economic power in the whole of South East Asia. What is left of it today can only be mourned.

Why waste money in the first place. Make it compulsory for all schools, govt and private institutions to hoist the flag sing the national anthem and go home. Let the religious institutions have a පූජා or prayer session and whoever wants let them attend. Unless the govt wants to curry favor with the defence institutions.... Cut the cost off.....people don't want to see repetitive pompous pagentry and boring ceremonies at tax payers account. Unless the president wants to get saluted by the military.

Independence from what? Sri Lanka is still heavily dependent on the rest of the world for its survival! Best to spend this money on something practical.
