Severe lightning and thundershowers expected after 1.00 p.m. – Met Department



Colombo, April 20 (Daily Mirror) - The Meteorology Department has warned that thundershowers accompanied by severe lightning are likely to occur in most parts of the island after 1.00 p.m. today.

The Department said temporary, localized strong winds may also develop during thundershowers.

The public has been urged to take adequate precautions to minimize damage and ensure safety from lightning activity.

According to the advisory, people are strongly advised to seek shelter indoors and avoid taking refuge under trees during thunderstorms. The Met Department further warned against staying in open areas such as paddy fields, tea plantations, and open water bodies during adverse weather conditions.

The public has also been cautioned to avoid the use of wired telephones and connected electrical appliances during thunderstorms, as well as open vehicles such as bicycles, tractors, and boats.

Authorities have further urged people to remain alert to the risk of fallen trees and power lines.

In case of emergencies, the public is advised to contact local disaster management authorities for assistance.
