Colombo, June 16 (Daily Mirror) - The Cabinet has approved a project to modernize school hostel facilities across the country during the 2026–2028 period at an estimated cost of Rs. 1,008 million.
The decision was taken in response to concerns over the deteriorating condition of many school hostels, with authorities identifying 126 hostel buildings that are currently in an aged state and in need of urgent renovation and maintenance.
According to the Government, the limited maintenance carried out over the years has resulted in shortcomings in physical infrastructure, sanitation, health, and safety facilities, negatively affecting both the living conditions and academic performance of students residing in these hostels.
Recognizing the need to provide a more conducive environment for education and student well-being, the project aims to upgrade essential facilities and improve overall hostel standards.
The proposal was presented by Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Higher Education, and Vocational Education, and received Cabinet approval for implementation over the next three years.
