Colombo, June 17 (Daily Mirror) -The Meteorology Department has warned multi-day fishing vessels operating in Sri Lankan waters to exercise caution, as rough sea conditions and strong winds are expected over the next 24 hours.
According to the weather forecast issued at 7.00 a.m. today, showers or thundershowers are expected at several places in the sea areas off the coast extending from Chilaw to Matara via Colombo and Galle.
South-westerly winds with speeds of 30-40 kmph are expected to prevail. Wind speeds could increase to 50-60 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Kankasanthurai to Kalpitiya via Mannar and from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota.
Wind speeds may also increase up to 50 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Trincomalee to Kankasanthurai via Mullaitivu and from Kalpitiya to Galle via Colombo.
The Department said the sea areas off the coasts extending from Kankasanthurai to Kalpitiya via Mannar and from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota will be rough at times, while the sea areas from Trincomalee to Kankasanthurai via Mullaitivu and from Kalpitiya to Galle via Colombo will be fairly rough at times.
It further warned that temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers, advising fishermen and those engaged in maritime activities to remain vigilant.
