Retirement after 60 years for railway employees announced

The President's Secretary informed the Railway General Manager today about the retirement upon reaching the age of 60 years on December 31.

The agency stated in a notice that the Public Service Commission approved their service on a contract basis for essential staff.

The notice was released as per recommendations of the committee. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)

Who is going to pay for their pensions? In my country people retire at the age of 67, to make it affordable for all people. Only labour who do physical work can retire earlier.

Most experienced engine drivers over 55 and many passed 60 years. If the 60 year age limit is applied all long distance trains will come to a grinding halt. It is not easy to drive most of the Sri Lanka railways locomotives as they are over 50 years old. All controls are manual and driver judgment is critical. It takes years for training an engineer driver.

So recruit new people and TRAIN them. 50year old engine cannot be changed but 60years old people can be changed.

Recruitments should be done properly and good training should be given to the critical employers who are working in CGR.

This is another Rajapakse mess up. He extended the retirement age to 63 without any reason or consideration and also recruited 100,000 to government service for mere political advantage. Simply get the Indian assistance to train engine drivers. Its not rocket science anyway.
