Restructuring of CEB in disarray: Opposition MP

Opposition MP Dayasiri Jayasekara yesterday criticised the ongoing restructuring of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB), describing the process as being in disarray and raising concerns over the welfare of its employees.

Jayasekara said many workers are dissatisfied with the unbundling and are worried about the security of arrears payments, including pending medical claims, which they fear may be jeopardised under the new entities.

“Employees are uncertain whether the newly formed companies will honour their arrears payments,” he stated. “In addition, those considering retirement are demanding compensation beyond the minimum Rs. 5 million currently stipulated.”

He urged the government to address these concerns and ensure justice is served to CEB employees affected by the transition.

Apart from the central bank, CEB employees have extorted the highest wages for government workers in recent decades. When a country needs to make savings, this has to affects every institution. The privileges enjoyed by CEB employees are not carved in stone. If breaking up the CEB into four companies helps to save money, then it must be done. However, it would be better if these four companies were sold to trustworthy foreign companies that have a good reputation in this area.

Agree. I think the government should have firstly sacked many of these troublemakers before any restructure. What’s the point in taking these good for nothings to new companies. Government has been giving into too many of their extraneous demands not available to other government employees. If they sabotage, it’s the government’s responsibility to put things right, using all the powers it has.
