Report on Ella bus accident proposes introducing fail-safe brake system for passenger buses

Colombo, Sept. 22 (Daily Mirror) - The final report of the committee on the Ella-bus accident was handed over to Transport Minister Bimal Rathnayake today, the Ministry of Transport and Highways said.

The report has found out that the brake failrue and poor maintenance of the bus have been major causes for the accident.

The report has recommended introducing a special body to regulate owners and drivers of the buses used for special tours, the use of buses of proper standards and introdution of fail-safe brake system for passenger buses.

That's such a dumb idea. government is not in the business of building busses. only thing they can do is mandate a engine braking system for all heavy vehicle imports like the Jake Brake system used by old TATA busses that don't come here anymore and introduce a test for driving downhill with minimal braking for heavy vehicle drivers licenses

Private bus owners will always try to cut corners, and not do maintenance. Even fail safe bakes, they can disable themselves, if the fail safe brakes might get the way of their dangerous day to day operations. What is better is full inspections of buses, and like full inspections every six months, with photos taken of the brakes of the bus when it was inspected, so inspectors can be held accountable. And only pass inspection if the brakes will last beyond the time of the next inspection.

Only for special tour buses? Should be for all buses I think. Y'all seriously need to think a lot about the bus drivers and their standard of driving. Minimum qualifications for public bus drivers.

Low quality Ashok leyland lorry chasis busses not suitable for passenger transport these dosent have latest tech like ABS , EBS etc .please ban this kind of bus import and allow duty free good quality busses from china, korea and japan .Allow only buses with latest safety features

The main problem causing these accidents are the poor state of the busses and bad driving of the busses by drivers even unfit to drive a three wheelers. Sort these two problems and also have strict road rules which will stop this nonsence. Otherwise innocent people will get killed daily. Law enforcement is the key to all problems. In addition if there are fatle accidents then the owner of the bus also must end up with a lengthy prison sentance. Also start by introducing strict insurance conditions for busses witha minimm 10 Million payment for any person killed in a accident irrespective of who is to be blamed and this should apply for all busses, CTB and Private.
