Colombo, Feb. 2 (Daily Mirror) - Relief measures have been introduced for school students affected by recent adverse weather conditions under the Suraksha Sisu Insurance Programme, following a request made by the Education, Higher Education and Vocational Training Ministry.
Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation General Limited (SLICGL) has agreed to extend special consideration to claims submitted by students impacted by natural disasters such as floods and cyclones that occurred between November 26 and December 31, 2025.
According to the revised provisions, only claims relating to disaster-related incidents during the specified period will be considered. In cases where students have lost their parents or legal guardians due to a disaster, benefit payments will be made without applying the usual income limits, subject to the submission of documents confirming the loss.
Although not specifically stated in the original agreement, SLICGL has also approved external treatment benefits up to Rs. 20,000 for medical treatment, purchase of medicines and examination fees directly resulting from accidents caused by the disasters.
Special arrangements have been made for students whose entitlement documents relating to incidents between November 1 and November 26, 2025 were destroyed due to the disasters. In such cases, benefits will be provided based on recommendations from the school principal and the relevant Grama Niladhari. If bills issued by private hospitals have been destroyed, certified copies issued by the respective institutions must be submitted. Where diagnostic reports from government hospitals have been damaged, a medical recommendation letter containing patient details, admission and discharge dates and the nature of the illness will be accepted.
In addition, applicants who were directly affected by the disasters and were unable to submit claims or supporting documents within the stipulated time between November 1 and December 31, 2025 will be granted an extended submission period of up to 150 days, inclusive of an additional 60 days beyond the existing 90-day deadline.
Officials said that in instances where it is difficult to verify delays caused by disaster-related circumstances, Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation General Limited may request a confirmation letter from the relevant school principal or Grama Niladhari to support the claim.
