In Germany, fare evasion or riding in a higher class is a crime that can be punished with up to one year in prison.

    liyanage Tuesday, 05 March 2024 05:59 PM

Criminal offense true,But you can pay EUR60 within 30 days

    Maqs Tuesday, 05 March 2024 07:23 PM

I remember once when I was traveling in the Colombo to Kandy intercity train, a tourist couple after buying 2nd class tickets to Kandy had mistakenly got into the intercity train and when the ticket checkers caught them, even after many requests by the commuters in the train that this is a mistake, they penalized the couple and had to pay a hefty fine. They didn't get seats either.

Sam Silva Tuesday, 05 March 2024 06:56 PM

It was not a mistake. They deserve the hefty penalty and in future they will not abuse just because they are tourists.

This is how it should be. Equal treatment of locals and foreigners. Try doing this (travelling in higher class) even by mistake in a western country. Once, by mistake, I got into a UK train that did not stop where I had to get down. Ticket inspector charged me for the additional journey at the full price. (I had to also get a return ticket from the station to come back),

You do the crime you pay the time . Why excuse because they are tourists?

    ANNEPUSSY Tuesday, 05 March 2024 06:18 PM

give the railway workers a promotion

This could have been a mistake by these white tourists but the point is no white person likes to be challenged by a dark skin person even when the white person had done something wrong . The white skin expect the dark skin to respect them at all times. This is what happened here .

Kudos to the employees! Too many foreigners taking local laws, customs and hospitality of the locals for granted.

First class seats in Sri Lankan trains are worse than the standard class trains in developed countries, so tourists can assume that Fist class is the standard class. But , the fine should be enforced regardless if the inside signs clearly indicate the class of travel. But physical removal should be done only by the Police. But , the tourists should be handled with care

Some foreigners think that they can do whatever they want in Sri Lanka. Shouldn't have assaulted them but damn good if they were ordered out of the train!

Hello, i was in this train in the first class and have seen the Problem with the two british tourists. They have no tickets, not for first, second or third class. They aggressively refused to get off the train with constant new excuses. The whole train with all its passengers had to wait at the station for 45 minutes until the two were finally pulled off the train. I'm Matthias Langecker, German Tourist in Sri Lanka

Assaulted? To teach them a lesson? Well, where is the respect for the Tourists and fellow humans? These Nawalapitiya Station workers should be interdicted immediately to prevent future occurrence, Shame!

It would be helfpul if trains in Sri Lanka had signs with their destinations on railway cars. As a tourist I travelled quite a lot by train last month. On larger stations like Colombo Fort or Maradana it was totally confusing, loudspeaker announcements barely intelligible. We had to ask railway staff in order to board the right train.

White privilege ? Good for the railway workers.

No surprise when you IMPORT trash white into this country as 'Suddha' Tourists. They show how they can be above the law and resist arrest or even listen to the requirements.

Humans carry this behaviour problem of evading a cost if i possible .Human behavior cannot be identified by color or label for it get carried forward even if the venue change ,so law should prevail ..This seem a reinforced pattern of behaviour like shoplifting .The authority on board even checked if my ticket number tallied with my seat when I was on board a train in New York ..that is how it happens in most countries where the tourists come from ..so why are they driven to break rules in this hospitable island ?

This is how srilankan treatment for wrongdoers, drug dealers, thieves, And all types of criminals. Even there are deferent punishments too, chopping, hange to death, etc etc so on..srilanka is crime free country...

raj soma Wednesday, 06 March 2024 10:19 AM

They should have been fined and asked to pay 1st class fare

Fine them severely if it’s a Cheating Case Wednesday, 06 March 2024 10:48 AM

After investigating, if they were cheating, fines them 10 times the fare. This will teach them a lesson not to cheat anymore. If it’s done as a mistake, find out the reasons and follow up accordingly so that it won’t happen again

Samana Neethiya Wednesday, 06 March 2024 11:11 AM

The Law must be maintained as a LAW

Jayaseeli Christiansen Wednesday, 06 March 2024 12:13 PM

This is not the way to treat passengers, particularly tourists if they have violated these kind of rules! Perhaps even they did not realize that they have been sitting in a wrong class! After shown the mistake
