Colombo, March  14 (Daily Mirror) - The Railways Department has launched the process of train tickets and seat reservations only through the online system from today.

The official launch of this programme was held this morning at the Colombo Fort Railway station with the participation of Transport Minister Bandula Gunawardana.

Accordingly, ticket reservations, seat reservations and train travel by reserved e-tickets were launched.

Online ticket reservations will be made utilising an OTP code. Commuters can reserve their tickets and seats online through the link: http://seatreservation.railway.gov.lk/

Due to this online system comuters need not stand in queues at railway stations and Government employees too can reserve their warrant tickets through the new system.

But it is mandatory for the commuter to produce his or her identification at the railway station that has the facility of seat allotment within 7 days of making the particular seat allotment or 48 hours before the particular train journey, whichever comes first.

A ticket obtained through the seat reservation system is no longer required to be printed, and the passenger's printed ticket or a soft copy of the ticket is sufficient.

Earlier, seat reservations were made within 30 days prior to the journey and reservations started at 10 a.m. daily. But with the new online system the time for ticket reservations has been extended up to 07 p.m with effect from today.

What an idiotic, ill-conceived system was developed here by unworldly people. This system is inflexible and time-consuming. Here you have to go to the train station twice after booking online. Once for identification and the second time when you want to travel. Absurd. In developed countries, you book online and then either print out your ticket and seat reservation or download the Q-Code onto your phone. During the journey, the conductor will then check the ticket and, if necessary, the identity. In Germany, the earlier you book (up to 6 months in advance), the bigger the discount.

Sounds like a good system if being able to do what’s mentioned! Checking identification is good too. Also there has to be a system to prevent abusing the system by brokers.

This is what comes up only, physical ticket needs to be collected from mTicketing service enabled station. Please keep passenger's NIC/Passport details with you as you are required to provide NIC/Passport details to complete the reservation. Seats cannot be selected according to preference. Your seat will automatically be allocated according to the availability. Should be able to print ticket too online

That is Good. All the fellows in the Railway who were making a fast buck on these tickets and reservations will feel the pinch.

Do not do this promptly but do it gradually. People without smartphones and internet connections should be able to buy their tickets at the stations. Political motivation and show-off push some of our ministers to make quick decisions.

There is a mafia in the RD controlling ticket sales and only those connected can reserve seats. I experienced it last December 2023 to travel to Ella. The gang is able to transfer the tickets at a very high premium. Not sure how foolproof this new system is.

What is the point of an online reservation system if the commuter is required to physically visit the railway station within 7 days of making the particular seat allotment or 48 hours before the particular train journey to prove his/her identity?

A good move. This will minimize some discrimination.

Utter bullshit, half the time it does not work.

What about people who don't have access to the internet? Can they still buy at the counters?

There is obviously some outsider influence in booking platform where tickets are concerned. The reservations platforms are slow or unable for downloading. I suggest that special Compartments be it first or second class reserved ( at least 04) only for Tourists be available in each Train leaving Colombo. If this is a strain on the engine for the whole length of the journey, a special train from Kandy or Nanu -Oya be introduced to Badulla via Ella twice a day during the peak Tourist Season. Most importantly, a decent Canteen with some edible food and beverages is a crying requirement. Strict regulations should be adhered to prevent corruption and black market sales of Tickets for this sector.

seat reservations were made within 30 days prior to the journey and reservations started at 10 a.m. daily. But with the new online system the time for ticket reservations has been extended up to 07 p.m with effect from today. Means will the system be closed at 7 pm everyday?
