Railway gate operator arrested in Kollupitiya for being drunk on duty

Colombo, Nov. 14 (Daily Mirror) - Railway security officers yesterday arrested a railway gate operator at the Uttarananda railway crossing in Kollupitiya for being under the influence of alcohol while on duty, Railway Spokesman Asanka Samarasinghe confirmed.

The Uttarananda Mawatha railway crossing, located between Kollupitiya and Kompannavediya near Temple Trees, is a key crossing frequently used by ambassadors, high-ranking government officials, and other dignitaries.

The arrested operator identified himself as Sudath Dhammika, an assistant attached to the Company Road railway station. He is also the secretary of the Railway Clerks’ Parallel Services Association. Following the incident, the Secretary of the Ministry of Transport has suspended his duties.

Several railway employees have alleged that Dhammika had previously been involved in other illegal activities aimed at creating disputes within the railway system.

All arrangements have been made to stop all payments to Dhammika with immediate effect.
