President warns police officers linked to drug networks to leave or face removal

Colombo, Oct. 30 (Daily Mirror) - President Anura Kumara Dissanayake today issued a stern warning to Police officers allegedly involved in drug trafficking networks, urging them to immediately withdraw or face disciplinary action.

“Leave immediately! Otherwise, we will remove you,” the President declared while addressing the launch of the government’s new anti-narcotics initiative, “United as a Nation – National Drive”.

He said that many believe the country’s drug problem could be resolved if the Police Department were cleansed of corrupt elements—an assessment he agreed with.

“Some villages say that when information is given to the Police, people later come looking for the informant. Authorities are taking steps to stop this. This is the era where the highest number of suspensions have been carried out within the Police Force. We have already suspended many officers. Others must now step out of that network,” he emphasized.

The President also extended his warning to officials of other government institutions, including the Departments of Immigration, Motor Traffic, and Customs, cautioning them to cease all involvement in illegal activities and disengage from such corrupt networks immediately.
