President to embark on official visit to Germany

Colombo, May 23 (Daily Mirror) - President Anura Kumara Dissanayake is scheduled to undertake an official visit to Germany commencing on June 10.

This was announced by Minister of Foreign Affairs Vijitha Herath today.

I hope the German government is aware of the major problems Sri Lanka still faces at a time when the world, and especially the economically weaker countries, are being gagged by Trump's tariff policy, and is prepared to offer the country help and support in every way possible. President AKD and his party took over Sri Lanka with a two-thirds majority during a difficult time following disastrous and partially corrupt previous policies, and are currently in the process of eliminating the worst negative developments and social injustices. Anura Kumara is a man of the people who himself comes from a "humble" social background and is particularly committed to helping the poor and socially disadvantaged in his country, trying to improve their situation. The German government should examine and optimize all economic and political options for intensifying cooperation in relations with Sri Lanka! The country and its people deserve it more than enough!

AKD will not meet German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. Instead, President Dissanayake will meet the Federal President of Germany Frank Walter Steinmeier. In Germany, the Chancellor is the Head of Government with all executive powers, whereas the Federal President is Head of State with protocol duties. In summary, a state visit that does not include a meeting between the heads of state is generally seen as a downgrade, indicating a reduced level of diplomatic importance and potential issues in the relationship between the two countries.
