President revives centuries-old tradition with Sri Maha Bodhi sapling presentation

Colombo, April 28 (Daily Mirror) - President Anura Kumara Dissanayake today ceremonially presented a sapling of the Sri Maha Bodhi to a group of monks led by Venerable Paññākāra Thera at Independence Square.

The presentation marked the conclusion of the Ehipassiko Peace Walk and was aimed at promoting Buddhism in the United States, while symbolising enduring cultural and diplomatic ties.

The gesture reflects a continuation of a long-standing tradition, drawing parallels to the historic offering by Emperor Asoka, who, through Sangamiththa Theri, gifted a sacred Bodhi sapling to Sri Lanka centuries ago, preserving the Dhamma for generations.
