Colombo, Nov. 12 (Daily Mirror) - President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has emphasized the need to expedite the Sri Lanka Unique Digital Identity (SLUDI) project and strengthen the nation’s overall digital economy framework to accelerate the country’s transformation into a modern, tech-driven economy.
Speaking at the progress review meeting of the Ministry of Digital Economy for the year 2025, held yesterday (Nov. 11) at the Ministry premises, President Dissanayake said, “Building a strong foundation for digital governance and public service delivery is essential for the success of our future economic strategy.
The digital economy will play a vital role in driving growth and efficiency under the 2026 Budget.”
The meeting focused on assessing the progress of digital development programs led by the Ministry and its affiliated institutions — the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL), the Department for Registration of Persons (DRP), and GovTech (Pvt) Ltd. Discussions also aimed to identify challenges delaying implementation and determine necessary policy and administrative actions to overcome them.
The President underscored the importance of improving coordination among government agencies and creating a more conducive environment for private sector investment in digital infrastructure, including the construction of telecom towers across the country.
“We must ensure that the benefits of digital connectivity reach every village. The target of installing 500 new telecom towers within three years under the ‘Communication to the Village’ initiative is a national priority,” he said.
