Colombo, Feb. 16 (Daily Mirror) - Government to implement a long term plan for reducing electricity tariffs over a three year period as promised.
Amidst the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) seeking a 13.56 percent increase in electricity tariffs for the second quarter of this year, Deputy Minister of Finance Anil Jayantha Fernando said yesterday temporary fluctuations could happen whereas the government is to implement a long term plan for reducing electricity tariffs in three years' as promised.
He told reporters that power tariffs are decided according to a methodology to recover the cost of power generation and that the generation cost must be reduced to decrease power tariffs.
The Minister said the government is adopting a long term plan to achieve this over a three year period.
Responding to a question, he said the government has introduced a mechanism to benefit low income and special categories of electricity users such as religious places even lower than the generation cost.
He said fluctuations can happen in power tariffs due to fluctuations in power sources.
