Colombo, April 12 (Daily Mirror) - Police officers who arrest a drunk driver will receive a reward of Rs. 5,000, the police said today.

Police Spokesman DIG Nihal Thalduwa said many vehicles have to be checked to arrest a drunk driver and the reward is given to motivate the officer on duty for that purpose.

He said that special police teams have been deployed round the clock to arrest drivers who drive under the influence of alcohol and that special motorcycle teams have also been deployed.

It was reported that at least 150,000 breathalyzer test kits have been provided to all police stations to detect intoxicated drivers.

DIG Thalduwa said the law will be strictly enforced against drivers who drive at high speed, violate traffic rules and drive carelessly when the roads are congested.

These guys are encouraging corruption. Instead give these guys bodycams so that if any wromg doing is done by any officer or pereon can be easily identified. This countery will never recover and will be competitivw with other major countries as we are always following old systems.

Switch on Personal Mobile Devices too Saturday, 13 April 2024 05:46 AM

Totally agree. Even if they have their body cams, better to switch on our mobile video and ensure in vehicle cam is switched on discreetly too if stopped for a check. So many clips on YouTube around the world showing various scenarios how some cops try to arrest someone and is later saved by their personal videos. Imagine the amount they will get by arresting 20 to 40 drivers per day!

    Chris Friday, 12 April 2024 10:48 PM

Police are always seen on their phones or sleeping and drunk themselves. The most corrupt organisation in the country.

At least this will some what deter bribery, should increase fines 10 fold too or else public wont care much, also could we stop with the joke of a system of transferring police officers and treat them as normal people as well, our current system cops can murder, rape or do whatever they want, they just get bailed out and transfer somewhere else to do their dirty work,

With this type of offer to the Police, they will arrest many who are not drunk. This is a bribe to Police Officers. This way every public service officers will claim like the Excise Dept and other depts which bring in revenue for detections.

The policeman will target making 4 legal arrests making Rs 20,000 and 4 illegal arrests making extra Rs 40000 ( 10000 each) , we will have a rich policeman force soon. If people do not drink they will make sure that you drink.

Tissa Fernando Saturday, 13 April 2024 07:19 AM

So more drunk drivers more money gor the police

    Terrence K Saturday, 13 April 2024 07:58 AM

The authorities of the Police Department should increase the fine to Rs. 500.000/= for drunk driving and stop this nonsense of giving rewards to the police officers which tantamounts to bribing since the police officers are performing a part of their duties!!!!!!!!

    Sokrates Saturday, 13 April 2024 09:32 AM

The completely wrong way. Here police officers should get a reward for doing their job correctly for what they get their salary. Furthermore, this only increases bribes. Unless the entire police department is completely modernized, such as in the UK or Germany, such measures are absolutely stupid.

Jathipala Kanhadige Saturday, 13 April 2024 11:08 AM
