Colombo, April 18 (Daily Mirror) - The Police department has decided to enhance crime detection by integrating public and private CCTV camera systems with the Police CCTV camera system, a senior police officer said.

In the initial stage, around 2000 CCTV cameras from private entities, including residences in Colombo city, will be linked to the police's camera network.

This initiative will be carried out in collaboration with interested participants. Individuals and private companies with CCTV systems are encouraged to connect their cameras to the Police CCTV system in Colombo, the official said.

As the second stage, steps will be taken to integrate the police camera system with cameras across the country.

While there is a notable presence of cameras in homes and private establishments in Colombo, their current impact on crime prevention is deemed minimal. The police department has only 176 CCTV cameras.

Accordingly, direction has been issued to implement the programme as soon as possible.

Will that mean Police Camera footage could be accessible by private parties specifically organised criminals

    Ishan Thursday, 18 April 2024 04:22 PM

Nope, that means Police central monitoring system can see or access the footage from the private owned CCTV system. Its normal here in Qatar and it's welcome change.

@,Ishan, I was actually thinking of organised criminals getting access to CCTVs once police network is linked to private networks. The cyber security are is very weak in Sri Lanka.

Need Local Lost Cost Quality CCTV’s Thursday, 18 April 2024 08:30 AM

More should be done to locally produce low cost quality CCTV’s with sound options too. With the ever increasing crime rates, these CCTV’s with assist with the investigations and also act as a deterrent to would be criminals and troublemakers.

low Cost??? how low do you need???

Lower Cost than Imported Models Thursday, 18 April 2024 10:23 PM

@Mahmood - obviously lower than those imported models from China. Locally made products will cut down on freight charges and lots of middlemen will be bypassed. From the factory directly to the retailer. Looks like you are being affected if it’s locally produced!
