Members of both the Government and the Opposition are up in arms against the recent salary hike granted to the employees of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL).

The latest attack came from Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva who said Parliament should be given the right to decide on the salary increments of the CBSL officials.

"Parliament should approve any salary hikes for Central Bank officials as it is the legislature that has the power over finances. Let us bring in such a law," he said.

"Do office assistants of the Central Bank perform any special role to become entitled to an exorbitant salary," he asked in response to the salary hike given to Central Bank office assistants.

Chief Opposition Whip Lakshman Kiriella also criticised the salary hike.

"The monthly salary of a Deputy Governor of the Central Bank has been increased to Rs. 1.6 million while a peon's salary has been increased by Rs. 70,000," he said.

Very unjustifiable! We need more thovila to kick these people out. Nandasena cannot get even a clerical job in Australia. That is the reason he is running after politicians!

    Jayantha Wednesday, 21 February 2024 03:08 PM

Nandal and all deputies responsible this should be sacked immediately.

    Mahesh Wednesday, 21 February 2024 03:15 PM

Is this one reason why Dr Nandalal Weerasinghe wanted an "Independent" Central Bank? So that they could do anything without being answerable to Parliament or accountable?

Rs 1.6 million is just US$ 5000. No chairman or CEO of a private company would get out of bed for that in the morning. It's all just greed and jealousy on the part of the parliamentarians, who earn multiple times a month through corruption.

This is reality Wednesday, 21 February 2024 03:35 PM

And the next episode will be a massive pay rise motion by Parliament for all MPs, with both the government and the opposition MPs raising all four limbs in approval. After all, they work more strenuously than the staff of CBSL.

They are special service employees. To join the Central Bank you need a first or a second upper class degree and then do your masters and doctorate. It's not like the 225 in parliament who don't have even have a JSC Certificate. So don't compare

This money could have been better used to bring down the price of essential commodities so that those unemployed will also benefit..

How can the governor who knows well about the economic down fall of the country approve such an unjustifiable increase at this moment? Has he approved it for the other employees so that he also could get his salary increased? There should be a separate body under the parliament to approve all salary and perks of government institutions. If possible this can be extended to private sector also because for increasing the salaries of top executives there are cases in the past of engaging in unethical practices of showing wrong figures and cheating the shareholders. A very good example is the famous Enron scandal in USA which brought the company down

Didn't the CB governor say that his monthly salary was LKR 400,000? Going by this report, if a deputy governor of CB is paid LRK 1.6 Million, how much more would the governor be paid? What is going on in this Country?

melville perera Wednesday, 21 February 2024 05:12 PM

how very thoughtful and considerate of him towards his employees in the midst of severe financial restrictions introduced by him to all financial institutions following IMF directions and driving shareholders NUTS where CBSL is gaining immense profits with their investments including allied customers and very consoling to note that the entire parliament is in an uproar against his self appointed directions. He should be taken to task for his actions seeing the general citizens pain of mind and the turmoil the country has been driven to on such issues

    Citizen k Wednesday, 21 February 2024 05:31 PM

Central bank was given independent status .Hence they think only about their staff while preaching to the rest of the country to tighten their belts.

But over last two decades they did a magnificent job in impartially monitoring the economic health of the country and saving the country from a possible bankruptcy - lol Like MPs did they also receive bribes from Ranil's pals Aloysius and Mahendran

    Lankan Wednesday, 21 February 2024 07:00 PM

They can do the work you do in the Parliament but you can't do their work in the Central Bank. They are clearing all the messes you created for the country.

    Ima Wednesday, 21 February 2024 07:00 PM

Cabrral alone withJayasudara,Rajapaksha brothers and some others were declared as responsible felons for obliteration of economy of SriLanka, this scoundrel Cabraal, used his political connections, to elevate himself to a position parallel to cabinet minister, and got his pension also increased, does he deserve to have a pension after he was punished by supreme courts for destroying Sri Lankan economy

Sam Silva Wednesday, 21 February 2024 07:06 PM

    Spartacus Thursday, 22 February 2024 06:37 AM

This is not the time for pay hike specifically for State Sector workers because they have been part and parcel of this countries bankruptcy whether it is Central Bank or Registrar of Motor Vehicles or Parliament.

    Sambo Thursday, 22 February 2024 08:02 AM

If they that much educates rare species in the country were they sleeping when the central bank was been ransacked and the dollars and gold drained and the country declared bankrupt. They should be held responsible for it as well.

This is only a peanut compared to their exorbitant allowances. CBSL employees are given opportunities to study maters or PHDs in the world class universities with paid leaves. And some are vanished after obtaining the qualifications. If you go through staff cadre, considerable no of staff are relations each other or relatives of retired staff members and other connected parties. Even they got interest over 28% p.a. for EPF funds where public only got 9% during 2022. This was raised by the MPs at the parliament and so far, I didn't see any justification from CBSL or Fin Minister. But Governer said their internal policy to be changed in next renewal. By saying others to tight the belt what the CBSL is doing? Are they in a different world? Even doctors got 35k allowance. Apart from the above, lots of irregularities to be discussed. Bond case, bankrupting the country, ect..
