Parliament approves VAT (Amendment) Bill

Parliament, Dec. 11 (Daily Mirror)- The Value Added Tax (Amendment) Bill where VAT is imposed on 97 items was approved by a majority of 45 votes at the third reading.

A total of 100 members voted for the Bill while 55 voted against it.

Former Minister Roshan Ranasinghe, who was removed from the cabinet recently, voted against it while Vadivel Suresh of SJB voted in favour.

Good. The right thing is being done. The bottom line is that the bitter medicine needs to be taken by the patient to recover. Pain before gain. At least the m9b had the courage to do the right thing as needed rather than pander to popular sentiment.

Tell that to the poor who can't afford to feed themselves, yoy might be able to bear the increase but the poor have no way to live other than be sent to dangerous jobs in Middle East, become prostitutes, or starve to death, but hey good that gov can maintain their luxury lives, while putting burden on the poor
