Colombo, Feb. 12 (Daily Mirror) - Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya reiterated that providing quality education to children remains the government’s top priority during an educational observation tour in the Hambantota district today (12).
The Prime Minister visited Ruhunu Vijayaba National School in Beliatta, including its Primary School, where she inspected new workbooks for first-year students of 2026, monitored progress in the core curriculum, and observed classroom activities.
In discussions with teachers, Dr. Amarasuriya highlighted the government’s appreciation for educators’ role in building a civilized society. She also noted that work is underway to establish an Education Council to safeguard teacher professionalism and ensure high-quality education.
The Prime Minister emphasized the government’s aim to eliminate infrastructure disparities among schools and provide equal opportunities for all children.
She subsequently visited Weeraketiya Rajapaksa Primary School, observing first-year classrooms and teaching methods under the new education reforms, and interacted with the students. Later, she met with teachers of Weeraketiya Central School and its Primary School to discuss challenges in maintaining Advanced Level classes and retaining students at this stage.
Dr. Amarasuriya also inspected Hambantota Lunama Dutugemunu Maha Vidyalaya, noting that the school’s infrastructure exceeds the current student population. She urged the administration to implement proper planning to boost enrollment, highlighting the potential benefits of fully equipped schools in future development initiatives.
