Over 700 prisoners to be released on Independence Day: Prisons spokesman

Colombo, Feb. 03 (Daily Mirror)- A total of 754 prisoners including 25 female inmates will be released from prisons island-wide tomorrow on Presidential amnesty to mark the 76th Independence Day, Prisons Commissioner and Prisons Spokesman Gamini B. Dissanayake said.

He said the prisoners will be released according to the powers vested with the President under Article 34 of the Constitution and in view of the Independence Day.

Most of these people are imprisoned for non payment of fines. It is an absolute disgrace to incarcerate people for such things. Some of the comments here show the lack of basic knowledge
