Over 4.4 million students to receive free school uniforms in January

Colombo, January 8 (Daily Mirror) - More than 4.4 million students across the country are set to receive free school uniforms in January 2026 under a programme implemented by the Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education.

The initiative will cover students in government and government-aided schools, as well as student monks and lay students attending government-approved Pirivenas. The ministry said the programme has been made possible through a full donation of 11.484 million metres of uniform cloth from the People’s Republic of China, with all consignments already received at the port.

The official acceptance ceremony for the donation is scheduled to take place on January 13, 2026, under the patronage of the Minister of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education.

The ministry said arrangements are in place to begin distributing the cloth stocks to divisional education offices from January 19, 2026, ensuring that uniforms are made available to schools and students ahead of the new academic year.
