Colombo, January 26 (Daily Mirror) - Transport, Highways and Urban Development Minister Bimal Rathnayake today accused the Opposition and its Leader, Sajith Premadasa, of deliberately creating unrest in the country, claiming their actions had led to the postponement of certain aspects of the new education reforms.
Addressing the media after a function held at the Colombo Fort Railway Station, the Minister said the Opposition had spread false statements, causing unnecessary panic among parents and undermining public confidence in the reform process.
“After creating panic among parents, it has become difficult to implement education reforms successfully. There are shortcomings at any stage when introducing reforms, but every such issue is now being portrayed as a failure caused by the reforms themselves,” Rathnayake said.
He further said that the Opposition had little political future and stressed that the government would not create opportunities for its survival through disruptive actions.
Clarifying the government’s position, the Minister said the education reforms would not be postponed, and that four and a half out of the five proposed criteria would be implemented as planned. He explained that the limited delay was due solely to an issue related to the Grade Six English module.
