Colombo, Feb. 9 (Daily Mirror) - A discussion on regularizing school student transportation was held at the Prime Minister’s Office this morning (9) under the patronage of Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya.
The meeting brought together officials from the National Transport Commission (NTC) and the Education Ministry to review draft regulations for the school transport service and discuss new proposals to improve it.
Key points included addressing transportation needs arising from school reorganization under the new education reforms, minimizing existing issues, and enhancing the efficiency of the “Sisu Seriya” school transport service. Discussions also focused on strengthening child protection, preventing abuse and harassment during transport, and improving the professionalism and accountability of service providers.
The meeting highlighted collaboration between the Ministry of Transport, Highways and Urban Development, the NTC, the Education Ministry, and the Child Protection Authority to ensure a safe and reliable system.
Transport, Highways and Urban Development Minister Bimal Ratnayake, NTC Chairman P.A. Chandrapala, and senior officials from both ministries participated in the event.
