No power cuts despite diesel price hike” – Government assures amid public doubts

Colombo, March 16 (Daily Mirror) - The Power and Energy Ministry said that there would be no power cuts in the country despite the recent increase in diesel prices, dismissing concerns that the higher fuel costs could disrupt electricity generation.

Ministry officials said no decision had been taken to impose power cuts at present, stressing that the country currently has adequate fuel supplies to maintain electricity generation.

According to officials, sufficient stocks of diesel and furnace oil are being supplied by the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) to support thermal power generation.

A senior official of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) also claimed that the situation remains stable due to alternative energy sources.

“We have sufficient water capacity in reservoirs to generate hydroelectricity and there is also strong sunlight contributing solar power to the national grid,” the official said.

However, the official admitted that hydropower generation could be affected in the future depending on rainfall received in catchment areas, raising concerns about the sustainability of current assurances if dry weather conditions continue.
