No egg donation at Castle Street Hospital for Women

Colombo, Oct. 38 (Daily Mirror) - Responding to recent media reports, Dr. Ajith Dantanarayana, Director of the Castle Street Hospital for Women in Colombo, clarified that there is no ova (egg) donation programme currently in progress at the hospital.

“Only the sperm donation programme is underway,” Dr. Dantanarayana said. “The sperm bank, which was launched recently, has already registered over 150 men as sperm donors. So far, ten women have conceived, and over 200 others are currently receiving support through this programme.”

Earlier reports claiming that the hospital had begun an egg donation programme were false, he emphasised.

The misinformation suggested that eggs would be obtained from donors to help women who cannot conceive due to lack of active eggs, a programme that is not being conducted at the hospital.

However, Dr. Dantanarayana added that the hospital’s sperm donation initiative is designed to support couples facing infertility, offering a scientific and safe pathway to parenthood.
