Colombo, Jan. 28 (Daily Mirror) - Mass Media Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa today said the Government must first examine the mentality of Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa before responding to his demands on the new education reforms.
Addressing the media in Kalutara the Minister recalled that Premadasa had earlier staged a protest in front of the C.W.W. Kannangara statue in Mathugama, calling for the proposed education reforms not to be introduced to children. However, he noted that the Opposition Leader is now urging the Government to implement the same reforms immediately.
“If these education reforms are not implemented without delay, there is a possibility of producing more individuals like Sajith Premadasa in the future. That itself is another reason why these reforms must go ahead,” Dr. Jayatissa said.
He confirmed that the new education reforms for Grade One will be implemented from January 29. In line with these changes, reforms for other grades will also be introduced, with the exception of Grade Six.
The reforms will be rolled out in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and the National Education Commission, while the relevant programmes are currently being developed.
Responding to criticism from the Opposition Leader, the Minister said Premadasa had claimed there were around 147 issues in the new modules. “We cannot work according to the tune of Sajith Premadasa. His comments show that he has not even read the modules,” Dr. Jayatissa added.
