Colombo, Sept. 23 (Daily Mirror) - The government has completed a year in office but has yet to amend the Consumer Protection Act, National Consumer Front leader Asela Sampath told the Daily Mirror.

He criticized the government for failing to implement its own policy to protect consumers by ensuring the availability of quality, reasonably priced food. He pointed out that there is currently no minimum price control for essential food items.

“An egg costs Rs. 28, yet products made from eggs, such as egg hoppers at Rs. 120 and egg rolls at Rs. 150, are priced excessively. The minimum cost should be around Rs. 70–80. When egg prices drop, the prices of related foods should also decrease, but that is not happening. At present, there is no specific price control for any food in the market,” he said, providing examples to illustrate the issue.

He further said the government’s responsibility to make affordable, nutritious food available for working-class citizens. Sampath cited the example of a food packet introduced in the Narahenpita area at Rs. 250, which failed to attract consumers due to concerns over its cleanliness.

The National Consumer Front is now urging the government to introduce price controls on essential food items as a matter of urgency.
