Colombo, Feb. 10 (Daily Mirror) - “If the government thinks that it can suppress the opposition, suppress the Maha Sangha, destroy the culture of this country, and make its own policy decisions as the diaspora wants to win an election, the government is wrong,” said Namal Rajapaksa, National Organizer and Member of Parliament of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP).
Addressing the media, Mr. Rajapaksa said the SLPP is fully prepared to face any election at any time and challenged the government to allow the public to decide through the ballot. He said delaying elections only reflects the government’s fear of public opinion.
He said that provincial council elections should be held without further postponement, allowing voters to clearly express their preferences. According to him, timely elections would reveal the true standing of the government among the people.
Mr. Rajapaksa also highlighted the party’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its grassroots network, particularly through youth engagement. He said the SLPP’s youth initiative, the Lotus Movement, is actively bringing together politically minded youth and members of civil society to shape future political strategies based on public expectations.
Raising concerns over unresolved allegations from past administrations, Mr. Rajapaksa said several issues related to corruption and political funding remain unanswered. He referred to recent public claims made by former officials, insisting that those responsible should come forward and clarify the truth.
He further recalled assurances given by the current President regarding hidden files and promised investigations, stating that the public is still waiting for justice to be delivered through transparent and credible inquiries.
Mr. Rajapaksa said that suppressing dissent and delaying democratic processes would not secure electoral victory, reiterating that the people’s mandate remains the ultimate authority.
