Namal urges proactive measures to protect Northern families ahead of monsoon

Colombo, Sept. 25 (Daily Mirror) - SLPP MP Namal Rajapaksa today called on the government to take immediate, proactive steps to safeguard families in Sri Lanka’s northern regions who are at risk of displacement during the upcoming monsoon season.

Speaking in Parliament, Rajapaksa highlighted the recurring hardships faced by residents who are forced to seek temporary shelter in schools and government buildings as seasonal rains trigger flooding and other emergencies.

“Every year, families are displaced and seek refuge only after disaster strikes. We need a coordinated effort to relocate vulnerable communities in advance to ensure their safety and reduce disruption,” he said.

The MP also raised concerns about students in affected areas, especially those preparing for the GCE Ordinary Level and Advanced Level examinations.

“We cannot allow natural disasters to derail the futures of our young students. I urge the Education Minister and the Hon. Prime Minister to take immediate steps to identify and support these students, so their education continues without interruption,” he added.
