Namal urges calm amid global tensions

Colombo, March 1 (Daily Mirror) - Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) National Organiser Namal Rajapaksa has issued a statement highlighting the impact of global conflicts on Sri Lanka, urging preparedness, dialogue, and the protection of citizens both at home and abroad.

Speaking on the current tensions involving the U.S., Israel, and Iran, Rajapaksa emphasized that “small nations feel the ripple of every great power conflict.” He noted that disruptions to trade, energy, and supply networks can directly affect livelihoods, markets, and essential services in Sri Lanka.

Reflecting on the country’s own history, he said, “Decades of war taught us how deeply lives, communities, and economies can be affected. We strongly condemn violence in all forms.” He added that even during the latter stages of Sri Lanka’s conflict, the nation sought dialogue and diplomacy as the path to lasting peace.

Rajapaksa called on the Sri Lankan government to anticipate potential risks, strengthen contingency plans, and support citizens who could be affected by international crises. “I hope all Sri Lankans living and working in affected regions are safe. Protecting our people, at home and abroad, must always come first,” he said.

He further said that preparing for consequences, promoting discussion, and maintaining stability remain the most effective ways to ensure security and prosperity, both within Sri Lanka and across the region.
