Colombo, March 10 (Daily Mirror) - Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa has raised concerns over the recent increase in fuel prices, saying it contradicts government assurances that the country has oil reserves sufficient for 45 days.
Speaking to journalists at the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna on Nelum Mawatha, Rajapaksa said that although the President and the Minister had assured the public that there was no need to worry, oil prices have nonetheless risen in line with global market trends. He noted that world oil prices had actually fallen slightly before the increase, raising doubts about the government’s handling of the situation.
He further linked the price hike to the alleged coal scam, describing it as “a huge fraud” that shifts financial losses onto the people. Rajapaksa questioned whether the government had prepared short- and medium-term programs to address such challenges and criticized the authorities for allegedly delaying coal tenders and importing inferior coal, causing significant losses.
“The government must decide today whether the burden will continue to fall on the people or whether a reasonable program will be implemented,” he said. He urged authorities to consult with the private sector and other political parties to consider the short-, medium-, and long-term impacts of the Middle East conflict on Sri Lanka, warning that unilateral decisions would deny justice to the people.
