NMRA CEO Dr. Vijith Gunasekera removed



COLOMBO (DAILY MIRROR) - Chief Executive Officer of the National Medicines Regulatory Authority (NMRA) Dr. Vijith Gunasekera has been removed from his post, the Daily Mirror learns.

According to informed sources, he has been removed based on a collective decision taken by the board members of the NMRA.

Accordingly, the CEO is to be absorbed to the Health Ministry.

Dr. Gunasekera was embroiled in controversy with regard to the alleged imports of substandard human intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) using forged documents.

In light of this, travel bans were issued on Dr. Gunasekera, Supplies Division Director of the Ministry of Health Dr. Kapila Wickramanayake and the owner of the company involved in forging documents to import substandard human intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG).

Meanwhile, Dr. Vijith Gunasekera was also alleged to have destroyed several vital documents at the NMRA recently as claimed by the Society of Government Pharmacists.

The Daily Mirror earlier learnt that the NMRA CEO was asked to step down; however, he had refused to do so.   

The NMRA under the leadership of its former Chairman and CEO Dr. Vijith Gunasekera has faced a spate of allegations with regard to the influx of inferior-quality medicines in the recent past.
