Moves to reinstate members of LG bodies against democratic principles: NPP

National People's Power (NPP) will not allow the proposed Act to be passed in Parliament to reinstate members of the expired Local Government bodies as it is against democratic principles, NPP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake said today.

Speaking at the NPP convention of the Wattala electorate, he said SLPP MP Jayantha Ketagoda has moved a Private Member’s Bill to reinstate members and heads of LG bodies as the LG polls are yet to be held.

He said it was against democratic principles to reinstate former members and that only the members elected by the people had a right to represent them in local bodies.

“Members of Local Government bodies cannot be reinstated through an Act passed in Parliament. It can only be done through the people’s mandate. We will not allow the government to paly with the people’s mandate,” he said.

Dissanayake said the people should be given the right to elect their representatives in a democratic country.(Ajith Siriwardana)

Logic of trying to do this very much clear ..it is to win next Presidential election...This president like his uncle knows how to play with the system...He knows well he can't win any election on his own ..his Dodgy allegiance with SLPP will not work for him at all..it can backfire on him and he is very much clever and talented Politician and he wants to lay the ground for next election..so he needs to have grass root support at least he need some people in at local council levels .. He needs to have some support from local Council members if he wants to win election so right now they don't want to any Elections for fear of defeat . They want to use old members to play old dirty politics.. That is why they need them now

NPP at least constantly speak up against the ongoing corrupt practices against democracy. The other parties like SJB, and the SLPP break away faction benefit from less democracy so they don't make much noise. There can never be proper democracy in this country until revolution that then overthrows the whole racist and religious constitution.
