Motorcycle registrations dominate as vehicle numbers surge in 2025

Colombo, January 6 (Daily Mirror) - A total of 312,177 motor vehicles were registered during the past year, with the majority being motorcycles, which accounted for 223,228 of the total, JB Securities (Pvt) Ltd reported.

The company’s analysis of vehicle registrations between November 2023 and November 2025 showed a significant increase in registrations in 2025 compared to 2024. Last year, 22,381 motor cars were registered, up from just 823 vehicles in 2024.

The report also highlighted the growth in premium, hybrid, and electric vehicle segments. A total of 985 premium passenger vehicles were imported in 2025, while 16,071 hybrid vehicles and 36,501 electric vehicles were registered during the year.

Three-wheelers saw a dramatic rise, with 13,768 registered in 2025 compared to only 8 in 2024, and bus registrations increased from 121 in 2024 to 722 in 2025.

JB Securities noted that the surge in vehicle registrations reflects both rising consumer demand and the growing adoption of hybrid and electric vehicles in Sri Lanka.
