Moldovan tourist drowns in Habaraduwa Hotel pool

Colombo, April 27 (Daily Mirror) - A 36-year-old Moldovan national who was staying at a tourist hotel in Liyanagoda, Habaraduwa died after drowning in the hotel’s swimming pool, the Habaraduwa Police said.

According to police, the foreigner had arrived in Sri Lanka on February 8 with his mother, who found him dead in the hotel's swimming pool this evening. She informed the hotel manager, who then notified the police.

Police later reviewed CCTV footage from near the swimming pool, which revealed that the deceased, identified as Narubai Mihail had entered the pool at around 10:45 p.m on April 26, 2025. It was observed that he fell ill shortly after entering and drowned in the four-foot-deep pool at around 11:30 p.m.

A post-mortem examination is scheduled to be conducted at Karapitiya Hospital, while further investigations are underway by the Habaraduwa Police.

IF IT WAS OBSERVED THAT HE FELL ILL SHORTLY AFTER ENTERING (OBVIOUSLY THE POOL), WHY WASN'T HE NOT IMMEDIATELY TAKEN OUT OF THE POOL BY THE PERSON WHO OBSERVED THAT HE FELL ILL SHORTLY AFTER ENTERING THE POOL?. WOULD NOT BE VISITING THIS HOTEL FOR SURE AND WE NEED TO SPREAD THE WORD. LOOKS LIKE THIS HOTEL IS SHORT STAFFED AND OR IRRISPONSIBLE STAFF WHO ARE NOT TRAINED TO MOVE AROUND WHILE ON NIGHT SHIFT.

Tourists must be warned there are no life guards at the pool or beaches and staff are not certified in Basic Life Support. It should be the law and mandated for all hotel staff in Sri Lanka as in the USA. Condolences to his mother who must be traumatized. Hope she gets the help she needs to return to her home and heal.

Swimming pools should have a life guard on duty. The hotel should be accountable for this breach of safety regulations.

According to the law, hotels whose swimming pool is not deeper than 1.20 metres do not need a life guard. When this law was introduced a few years ago, many hotels (unfortunately) remodelled their pools in order to save on staff. It is extremely difficult to swim properly in pools only 1.20 metres deep. One of the few hotels that still have good pools with a depth at the deep end of at least 1.80 metres is the Jetwing Beach and the Paradise Holiday Village in Negombo. The Qeens Hotel in Kandy even has a depth of 3 metres. Apart from that, you can also drown in a puddle if you fall down, for whatever reason, fall unconscious and lie face down in the puddle.

He must have been observed on CCTV - Usually hotel pools close at night - but there is no barrier to prevent anyone entering the pool of they wished to do so - so tourists who do swim at night are usually breaking hotel rules -
