Met. Dept. warns of high temperatures next month

Colombo, March 25 (Daily Mirror) - The Meteorology Department has warned that high temperatures affecting the human body are expected to continue throughout next month, Department Director Meryl Mendis said.

Speaking to the media, Mendis said that global temperatures have risen by between 1 and 1.5 degrees Celsius in recent years compared to normal levels, contributing to the current heat situation.

A forecast regarding the El Niño phenomenon in the Pacific Ocean indicates a further rise in sea surface temperatures, which is expected to influence global weather patterns. Considering this, the Meteorology Department has predicted that temperatures in the coming weeks will be significantly higher than usual.

The department added that the existing dry weather conditions will persist over next month. The highest temperatures are expected to mainly affect the Western, Sabaragamuwa, North Western, North Central, and Southern provinces, as well as the Vavuni and Mannar districts.

Authorities have urged the public to take necessary precautions to avoid heat-related health risks during this period.
