MP Jagath Withana death threats linked to underworld connections, says IGP

Colombo, Oct. 27 (Daily Mirror) - Inspector General of Police Priyantha Weerasuriya said that investigations have revealed that Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Jagath Withana, who recently claimed he was receiving death threats, has alleged connections with those involved with underworld figures.

The IGP made these remarks after meeting the Maha Nayaka Thera of the Ramanna Maha Nikaya.

He said the MP was provided with temporary police protection following the reported threats.

“It has been revealed that the MP has certain links with individuals involved in organised crime. We are conducting an open investigation to determine the basis of these threats,” the IGP said.

He further said that some individuals connected to organised crime and drug trafficking have already entered politics and are seeking to expand their influence at the national level.

The IGP said that political parties have a responsibility to ensure that such individuals are not granted nominations and do not enter politics “wearing white attire” while engaging in organised crime and drug trafficking.

Very good comment and also thanks for the temporary actions taken. It is unfair on tax payers money such people link to underworld become MPs and asks for security because they are MPs. Those threats are not political. SLPP and SJB to take note.

This is totally unacceptable for an IGP to make such public statement on an ongoing investigation. This it pure politicking and back licking. Washingtons get on with your white washing. Is this what the gullible supporters meant by SYSTEM CHANGE?

Be reasonable, when MP himself made a public statement what is police supposed to do. They must make a statement of the action they have taken. And besides, they can make statements about on going investigations when necessary. And stop making everything political related. If MP Jagath have a security threat police is responsible for protecting him. That is a fact. What we wanted to change is this unwarranted political influence and narcissisting behavior of politicians who thinks everything revolves around them.
