Limited water capacity amid dry weather, NWSDB warns

Colombo, March 25 (Daily Mirror) - The National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB) says the limited capacity of water treatment plants has become a concern due to the increased demand for pipe-borne water during the current dry weather conditions.

NWSDB Engineer A.M.P.C.T. Bandara told the media that although the daily water purification process has not been reduced, treatment centres across the country can only produce a fixed amount of drinking water. With consumption rising, the Board cannot increase production beyond its existing capacity.

According to him, the Ambathale Water Treatment Plant can produce about 560,000 cubic metres of drinking water per day, while the Labugama and Kalatuwawa treatment plants together produce around 150,000 cubic metres daily. He said these plants are already operating at their maximum capacity.

Due to the high demand, the NWSDB has urged the public to use water carefully, especially if the dry weather continues. Bandara emphasized that the request is not a restriction on usage, but a precaution to ensure the available supply can be maintained without interruptions.
