Lightning strikes cause islandwide blackout: CEB



Colombo, Dec. 9 (Daily Mirror) - The islandwide power blackout is due to multiple lightning strikes on several transformers and power stations, a Power and Energy Ministry official said.

Meanwhile, the Power and Energy Ministry  said the islandwide power blackout is also due to a breakdown in the transmission line from Kotmale to Biyagama.

They said the power restoration process is expected to be completed within two hours.

In addition a Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) confirmed the blackout is due to multiple lightning strikes on several transformers and hydropower stations.

The widespread power failure occurred at around 5 p.m. today.
