Licensed foreign employment agencies to hold peaceful protest seeking ALFEA reforms

Licensed foreign employment agencies have announced a peaceful protest calling for the immediate reform of the Association of Licensed Foreign Employment Agencies (ALFEA), citing long-standing and unresolved governance issues within the organization.

The protest is scheduled to take place tomorrow (3) outside the ALFEA office in Kotte.

According to the organizers, the current ALFEA committee has continued in office beyond its constitutionally mandated one-year term. They allege that this has occurred amid mass suspensions of members, unstructured leadership, and a failure to uphold ethical standards and constitutional responsibilities.

Protesters also point out that nearly 1,000 licensed foreign employment agencies are now divided among 13 separate associations, leading to internal conflicts and a weakened industry. They state that genuine license holders continue to face hardships due to outdated systems and unresolved structural problems.

The organizers have called on the relevant authorities to intervene urgently to restore constitutional governance within ALFEA, implement necessary reforms, and safeguard the interests of licensed agencies as well as the wider foreign employment sector.

They highighted that the protest will be peaceful and lawful, and is focused solely on institutional reform rather than personal or political agendas. The agencies expressed confidence in the authorities’ commitment to justice, transparency, and stability in an industry considered vital to the country’s economy
