Colombo, February 18, Daily Mirror) - National Organizer and MP of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna Namal Rajapaksa yesterday called on the Government to “leave aside narrow-mindedness and hatred” and heed the advice of trade unions and medical professionals, while raising alarms over national security and economic challenges.
Speaking in Parliament, he warned that the underworld had “raised its head” with a rise in killings, urging the Government to implement effective measures to ensure public safety.
He criticised current tax policies, alleging that while the Government had come to power pledging to strengthen farmers and the rural economy, it was instead reducing taxes on imported food, vegetables, and fruits, undermining local producers.
“You promised to protect farmers and form farmer organisations. Today, strengthening farmers seems to mean importing food and boosting businessmen,” Rajapaksa said.
He questioned the Rs. 10 billion allocation to purchase paddy, claiming farmers still cannot sell their harvest at fair prices, and alleged that the Government was suppressing concerns raised by farmer organisations.
Rajapaksa also pointed to delays in fertiliser distribution despite subsidy promises, unpaid compensation for crop damage, and unfulfilled housing pledges to affected communities. He said cheques issued for compensation had been returned despite claims that sufficient funds were available.
“If you do not protect farmers and fishermen, the country will lose its direction,” he warned, linking their welfare directly to food security and economic stability.
He further raised concerns over 750 Sri Lankans selected for overseas employment in Israel under a Government quota, who completed training but have been unable to proceed due to bureaucratic delays. Rajapaksa called on authorities to ensure justice, noting similar issues among workers heading to South Korea.
“The Government must intervene and fulfil promises to these citizens who worked for the nation and voted in support,” he urged, emphasizing that fairness and accountability were crucial.
