Kandy, December 9 (Daily Mirror) - National Organizer of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Namal Rajapaksa today claimed that the difficulties faced by the public during the recent disaster have been worsened by the lack of coordination among government institutions.
Speaking during a visit to the Gatambe Sri Rajopawanaramaya in Peradeniya, Rajapaksa said that field officers at the village level were doing their best to support families affected by adverse weather, but gaps in communication among state agencies were causing further inconvenience.
He pointed out that while the Education Ministry is preparing to reopen schools on December 16, many displaced families are still being sheltered in school buildings.
“At the same time, the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) is advising people to evacuate unsafe homes, while displaced persons are being asked to vacate schools for reopening,” he said, calling the situation contradictory and poorly coordinated.
Rajapaksa added that reconvening Parliament quickly would enable the government to better understand and respond to the issues faced by the public.
He also called for a select committee to investigate how early warnings and information regarding the disaster were communicated to the public.
“The government has made many promises, and those promises must be fulfilled. We are watching to see whether the President is taking the necessary steps, and we are ready to assist with coordination if needed,” he said.
Rajapaksa highlighted that a strong administrative structure and trust in government officials were vital.
“People will suffer if the government tries to implement its agenda without trusting its own public officers,” he said.
He further claimed that the government had issued instructions to appoint its own coordination officers in certain areas due to doubts about the existing administrative machinery.
