Colombo, March 4 (Daily Mirror) - Sri Lanka will receive eight used low-floor buses from the Japanese Government as a grant, following discussions on supporting the country’s public bus transport sector.

Cabinet spokesman and Minister Nalinda Jayatissa said the agreement was reached during meetings between the President of Sri Lanka and the visiting Japanese Parliamentary Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs in February 2025. Subsequent discussions with the Japanese Embassy in Sri Lanka confirmed Japan’s commitment to provide the buses.

The proposal, submitted by the Transport, Highways and Urban Development Minister, was approved by the Cabinet, paving the way for the grant to be delivered to strengthen Sri Lanka’s public transport system.

Good gesture from the Japanese government. Any other party in power the Minister would have asked for a personal present to accept the grant on be half of the government. We have not forgotten the light raid project with Japan where Minister Nidimatha Silva asked for a bribe that was reported to the SL Government by their Ambassador and the them President saved Silva to the detriment of the people

For all buses need to be converted to low floor for health and safety perspectives. We have had enough of these so called ‘Indian Lorrie’s’ running as buses in Sri Lanka and had so many accidents
