Colombo, March 23 (Daily Mirror) - Milk powder importers and wheat flour companies have assured the Trade, Commerce, Food Security and Cooperative Development Minister Wasantha Samarasinghe, that they will not raise prices of imported milk powder and wheat flour in the country.
The assurance was given today (23) when representatives from the companies, including Prima and Serendib, were summoned to the Ministry to discuss the impact of the ongoing war situation on supply and distribution networks and measures to maintain uninterrupted supply.
Although rising fuel prices and the increased value of the US dollar have affected production costs, the companies expressed their willingness to cooperate with the government to provide relief to consumers during this challenging period.
They confirmed that sufficient stocks of imported milk powder and wheat flour are available to last for the next three months, and no price increases will be implemented until after the upcoming New Year season. However, they noted that deliveries have been delayed due to fuel quota restrictions.
Minister Samarasinghe instructed the companies to register for a special data collection program aimed at identifying the fuel needs of food distribution transport service providers to better streamline planning in the sector.
