Colombo, May 15 (Daily Mirror) - Officials of the Immigration and Emigration Department failed to attend the meeting of the Committee on Public Finance (COPF) yesterday.

COPF Chief Dr. Harsha de Silva expressed his displeasure over their absence.

"The officials had agreed to attend the meeting but had failed to turn up despite the assurance given last week," Dr. De Silva said.

They did not attend because most probably the subject minister instructed them to do so. It looks like that they are openly robbing the country without any fear.

Corrupt and useless. In any other country, those useless people would have been sacked a long time ago. Not in this wonderland.

They are busy trying to block a new computerized system which will prevent their underhood businesses.

One time an immigration officer issued a visa for my cousin at airport, he never issued a receipt for it , he pocketed the money . What's the point in having committees if they don't have power to bring the officials in.

No end to the robbing of Sri Lankan people by politicians. World bank and IMF seem to be totally content with how the government is run. Shame on them all. There's no hope for Sri Lanka. That is my nihilistic opinion.

Yes, it was a theft in broad day light. They have no answers. May I suggest summoning the mastermind, Rani.

The Chairman and the other COPE members must have the courage to take stern action against these recalcitrant Immigration and Emigration Officials and also against the subject Minister.

Problem is they won't even read this article or the comments as they probably don't know English. But they work for Immigration Department.

These officials must be terminated immediately. This is an insult to the Speaker and the Parliament as this committee is part of the Parliament.

All the minister's crooks. Even the officials at the airport do not smile or greet people, both Sri Lankans and the foreigners. They are not fit to man such places that gives the first impression of a nation.

Does the committee have any authority to recommend disciplinary measures against the offenders?

Why does SL spend so much money on having these committees if they are useless in calling people and prosecuting wrong doers? How many people have been prosecuted as a result of these Committee investigations? Utter waste of public funds.
