Colombo, Nov. 26 (Daily Mirror)- The presence of Indian Navy’s indigenous aircraft carrier INS Vikrant in Colombo is a strong message of the importance placed on shared security, and the strengthening of friendly relations with partners such as Sri Lanka, Health Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said today.
Delivering remarks at a reception on board , he said the participation of the INS Vikrant-India's first indigenously built aircraft carrier and the INS Udayagiri in the International Fleet Review speaks volumes of the significance India places on its longstanding relationship with Sri Lanka.
"Your presence here also signifies India's Vision "MAHASAGAR", which underscores the importance of cooperation, connectivity, and shared security across the maritime domain. Sri Lanka is committed to ensuring that the Indian Ocean remains a region of peace, stability, and mutually beneficial engagement. The principles of MAHASAGAR-rooted in understanding the ocean as a shared space of opportunity and responsibility resonate with our longstanding collaborations in maritime security and regional development," he said.
Indian Navy’s indigenous build aircraft carrier INS Vikrant arrived in Colombo as its first international voyage outside India to participate in the upcoming International Fleet Review 2025 (IFR).
Sri Lanka Navy is hosting the fleet review, which will bring together ships from several countries—an event aimed at underlining Colombo’s ambitions to project a stronger role in regional maritime diplomacy.
The aircraft carrier, designed by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau and built by Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), is the largest warship ever constructed in the country. Commissioned into the Indian Navy by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 2, 2022, INS Vikrant is a symbol of indigenous potential, resources, and skills.
INS Vikrant's role in Humanitarian Aid and Disaster Relief (HADR) operations aligns with India's broader maritime strategy, particularly the 'SAGAR' initiative.
