ICC suspends Sri Lanka Cricket’s membership

(ICC) - The International Cricket Council Board has suspended Sri Lanka Cricket’s membership of the ICC with immediate effect.

In a statement released on Friday night, the ICC said that the SLC had breached its obligations as a member, in particular the requirement to manage its affairs autonomously and without government interference.

In its statement, the ICC said: "The conditions of the suspension will be decided by the ICC Board in due course."

The ICC Board is set to meet on November 21, after which the future course of action is expected to be clearer.

Sri Lanka is scheduled to host the ICC Under-19 Men's Cricket World Cup across January and February 2024.

The Sri Lanka men's team have had a forgettable time at the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023, winning just two of their nine matches and finishing with four points. They sit at No.8 in the points table with three more matches to be played in the league phase.

ICC should seriously consider relegating SL to Associate level at least for the sake of cricket. How can any country repeatedly score like 50, 55 and 171, (where as many associates are not falling for such dismal scores but not yet elivated to test status,) and expect to retain test status. If this happens the income for SL cricket will fall dramatically which would help keep away the corrupt vultures and paracites from interfering with cricketing matters. Only then cricket will rise up again in SL.

ICC anticipate that politics will not be interfering with the nation's cricket board. Though the ICC has termed the sanction a "suspension", in reality it is a warning as the ICC seeks to prevent further government interference in the running of SLC. As it stands, the suspension will not have any immediate serious impact on Sri Lankan cricket. Sri Lanka's World Cup campaign ended on Thursday and there is no cricket happening in the country until December. No ICC funds are due to go to SLC until January.

I think icc officials got caught here red handed for supporting corruption. Afg government took over by Thaliban which is an armed group. Then they took over sports and banned women also from palying. With that much of political inteference the icc did not do anything but just allowed to continue. So why double games here. Different approach to SL. The officials at icc should be investigated by an independent body for supporting terrorism too and probably the officials at icc should be taken to an international court. I think SL government have great opportunity to sue the icc and ask for huge compensation for tarnishing the image of SL.

Go for an immediate general election to regain the country and then cricket membership with a properly elected cricket committee. International Corruption Club would be the more suitable name. Just wondering why Afganistan cricket is not suspended. Did they bribe you enough icc. What about pcb. It is also a politically appointed and extended interim board. Proves that icc is corrupt now and looks like they tarnished our image intensionally. Probably we might be able to open a case against corrupt club and come out of current debt too. Lol

Suggest on individual basis’ Cricket lovers to email ICC officials on the wrong doings of SLC board, we should show it’s not political interference but even general public is against SLC board.

That is why we should get boys from leading schools like Ananda, Nalanda, Royal, St. Peters, St. Thomas, Trinity, Richmond etc., then the discipline is maintained, and we would have won at least six matches in the world cup.
